PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) —The Hero Thrill Show Pep Rally rode down Market Street Wednesday, with stunt-driving officers taking center stage.
Sirens blared and motorcycles roared as officers rode in formation under a flying American flag, wowing the crowd along 18th and Market streets. It previewed Saturday's 67th edition of the thrill show extravaganza starring Philadelphia Police and Fire department members, raising money to fund college scholarships for the families of fallen officers and firefighters.
That thrill show includes police officers and firefighters performing daredevil tricks on motorcycles and horses. One trick involves two men on one motorcycle, with one standing and the other laying down with his arms spread.
Jim Traynor, the instructing officer, is participating in his last year with the show. He said he is leaving on a good note for a meaningful cause.
“it’s very cool. This is my 27th year doing the show. I get to instill what it’s all about, the kindness,” said Traynor.
“Fallen cops and firefighters, they get killed in the line of duty. Everybody is there for them, then everybody goes away.”
But this fundraiser helps let them know help has not gone away. He said it offers much-needed financial support for these families.
Traynor also shared how the event helps connect with the next generation, showing Philadelphia the best side of the departments.
“Extend the hand of kindness and be a good police officer,” said Traynor. “Down at the show, all these police officers — male and female, wherever they come from — you can talk to them. They’re genuine individuals.”
The official Hero Thrill Show will be on Saturday, Sept. 10 at noon at the Wells Fargo Center.
