Philadelphia chef supports vax mandate, even as he expects it to hurt business

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Anyone expecting to eat out in Philadelphia must now show proof of vaccination against COVID-19. The rule applies to restaurants, bars, food courts, theaters and even sporting and performance venues like the Wells Fargo Center.

Chef Robert Pollard, with his wife, owns Breakfast Boutique, with locations in Chestnut Hill and Mt. Airy. He says 85% of his staff have been vaccinated and now his focus is shifting to customers.

"I've been talking to a lot of businesses in New York and how they've been doing it, since it's already been being done over there," he said. "So I've been trying to figure out how we want to do it here to make sure we don't insult or upset anybody."

He has posted a sign at the front door notifying customers of the mandate, and the host on duty will ask guests to see their vaccine card before they are seated.

He expects there will be some drop off in the number of customers.

"I definitely believe that our customers are going to go down a little bit. I definitely do believe that. I don't believe business is going to stay the same," he said. "Businesses [are] just getting back to being normal, I can say, within the last month, and now this mandate is going to get us back right to where we started at, you know, last year."

Still, he says, he supports the city's guidelines. And he says he is optimistic that things will get back on track in a few months.

For the next two weeks only, restaurants will have the option to accept a recent negative COVID-19 test from anyone who isn't vaccinated.
