PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Hundreds of Philadelphia senior citizens gathered in Fairmount Park Tuesday, just to enjoy a day of fun.
Senior Fun Day was the first citywide event for seniors since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
“I just wanted to come out and say how wonderful it is for us all to be back together again,” said Mayor Jim Kenney in welcoming a crowd of people who normally hang out at the city’s six older adult centers, and were happy to be at a large gathering again.

“It’s beautiful. So far, I’m enjoying it. I think it’s really nice,” said Emily Holmes, who attended the event.
Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Program Director Terri Kerwawich said she hoped it would help dispel the anxiety of the last two years.

“It hit them hard with the pandemic, not being able to get out,” said Kerwawich. “We thought this would be a good way to bring them all out, have them see each other again. It’s very good emotionally for them.”

Attendees enjoyed food, prizes, games and dancing.
Anna Maria was new to the group, having just retired, but she approved.

“I think it’s great. I think what they do for the older — us seniors — is great. It’s wonderful. You don’t mind getting older. There are a lot of benefits.”
And, as they say, it beats the alternative.
