PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The remnants of Hurricane Nicole will be arriving in the Philadelphia area on Friday, bringing heavy rain and strong wind at times from an expected collision with another weather system.
National Weather Service meteorologist Alex Dodd says we can expect an inch or more of rain northwest of Philadelphia.
“We want to be clear. We’re not seeing hurricane or tropical storm conditions from Nicole itself,” said Dodd.
“We’re seeing kind of a combined remnant low-pressure area work up the Appalachian Mountains on Friday to Friday night (and) merge with a cold front, another area of low pressure approaching from the northwest.”
Dodd expects light rain to begin in the late morning or midday on Friday, with moderate rain coming in the afternoon.
“I wouldn’t rule out a heavier downpour, and even some leaf-clogged drains might struggle to keep up with the rain rates briefly,” he said, adding minor flooding could happen in flood-prone areas.
“Gusty winds continue into later Friday night into Saturday, turning out to be kind of a mild, decent, just windy day on Saturday.”
Dodd says it’s likely wind will be stronger near the Jersey Shore, where less rain is expected.
“Wind gusts, if a stronger storm were to develop, could crack 50 miles per hour,” he said.
He added that because of recently dry conditions, the ground should absorb the rain without a problem, but he suggests making sure drains and gutters are clear and not clogged.
