Philadelphia launches free summer meal program for youth

The program is designed to help feed thousands of students while they are out of school

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia’s free summer meal program, one which helps feed thousands of city students while they are out on school break, is scheduled to begin next week.

Most summer meal sites will begin serving food Tuesday, with new sites added each week.

City officials said the meal distribution days and times will depend on each site. Families can call ahead by dialing 311, or they can visit the city website for a full list of sites and schedules.

All children under the age of 18 are eligible for meals, and no student ID is required. However, they must eat at the food site due to USDA regulations.

People with children in Philadelphia can also call a hotline of 215-770-4659 to find other free food resources this summer.

The program is possible through a partnership between the community, city services, and Philabundance.

As of Friday afternoon, the city has also established 23 general meal sites, 22 meal sites for older adults sponsored by either the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging or Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, and 77 general sites where people can pick up food for their households.
