PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Glenside man accused of intentionally hitting a 22-year-old on a bicycle with his SUV in July has been ordered to stand trial on several charges, including attempted murder.
The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. on July 13. According to testimony from detectives at a preliminary hearing, 41-year-old Phillip Prince accelerated his Jeep Compass down a hill on Meyer Avenue, near Ardsley Park, in Glenside, jumped a curb, and hit a 22-year-old on a bicycle, throwing him about 90 feet.
Prince’s attorney, Michael Walker, said his client did not intend to hit anyone.
“It was an unfortunate situation, and we’re just happy that the man is doing better,” he said.
The 22-year-old needed emergency brain surgery. Prosecutor Paul Pruitt said that while the victim still has a long way to go, he is improving.
However, Pruitt believes a video, which prosecutors played at the hearing, speaks for itself.
“You can hear acceleration down the hill and you see the impact, and it appeared that he crossed the street,” he said.
A witness told police that when he confronted Prince after the collision, Prince said the 22-year-old stole the bike.
“We’ll let this play out in the courtroom,” Walker added. “Certainly, I do not believe my client did anything intentional.”
Prince’s formal arraignment on attempted murder and aggravated assault is scheduled for Oct. 21.
