PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A group of Philly chefs who started helping out disadvantaged neighborhoods during the coronavirus pandemic will venture down south on Thursday to help the people of Texas.

The chefs are collectively known as "Everybody Eats Philly" and four of the five in the group plus some additional volunteers are taking their talents to San Antonio for the weekend.

"Honestly, we're going to give them some of Philly. We're going down there and making some Philly cheesesteaks," said Aziza Young, known as "Chef Z."

Young said she mentioned in passing to her fellow Everybody Eats co-founder, Stephanie Willis, that they should help the people of Texas after the storm.

"And Steph was just like, 'You know what? That's right,'" she recalled.

Willis found the church where they'll be setting up as well as donors and supporters to help them bring this effort together this Saturday, and Young said they managed to secure donations for their mission from companies such as US Foods.

"They're donating money so that we can purchase the food that we need. AquaHydrate, they're donating water, Mama Love Soul and Caribbean, SAPD, all these people, they're helping us," Young detailed.

"We're looking at minimum 250 people but we're getting ready to feed 600-1,000 people," she added. "We want to feed those that need it most; or that need it a lot and right now Texas needs it. Texas needs help."

Those who would like to help can visit their Instagram page or website for information on how to donate.

For Young, helping others is her life's mission and a lesson she wants to instill in her children.

"You don't get by in life without someone helping you," she said, "so why not help someone?"
