PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two Philly police officers shot and killed a man Friday afternoon in Mayfair after they said they confronted him for breaking into homes.
Police said they received several calls around 2:30 p.m. about a person breaking into properties along Tyson and Frankford avenues.
When officers responded, they were flagged down and pointed toward the man who was on Frankford Avenue.
“They attempted to stop that male; he fled; they gave chase. That chase ended up in front of a store on this block,” said Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore.
A physical altercation then broke out between the man and the two officers, and ended when the officers fired their weapons at him.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and has yet to be identified by police.
“We know they have body cameras that were activated; we know there’s video on this block, so we’re doing everything we can to do a complete investigation,” Vanore said.
Authorities recovered a knife at the scene.
