Philly getting bigger, more diverse according to US Census results

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The 2020 U.S. Census results are in, and it appears Philadelphia is growing in population, and diversity.

Philadelphia grew by nearly 78,000 residents over the past 10 years. It still ranks as the sixth-largest city in the country, with more than 1.6 million people. The surrounding counties are also growing. Montgomery and Chester counties saw the largest increases at 7% each.

Philly is becoming more diverse as well. The amounts of Hispanic and Asian residents increased the most, by 36% and 39% respectively. The populations of white and Black residents both decreased, however.

Undercounting has long been a concern, especially during the pandemic. A report released earlier this year estimated that nearly 60% of Philly households completed the survey.

Counts from the report will affect federal funding for services including housing, transportation and education. It will also determine the drawing of voting districts.

The Census Bureau said the numbers reflect changes, both in demographics and in survey design.
