Philly non-profit holds fundraiser supporting mental health services for restaurant workers

The money raised from the event will help restaurant workers pay for mental health care expenses

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Improving the mental health of hospitality workers is the goal of a new initiative from a Philadelphia non-profit organization.

As part of a new initiative, Cooks Who Care is hosting a “Nobody Knows” fundraiser on Monday at Stratus Lounge, located at 433 Chestnut Street.

Maria Campbell, founder of the nonprofit, started the initiative because oftentimes, hospitality workers have very little self-care practices. She says it’s not uncommon to meet people in the hospitality industry battling addiction and mental health issues:

“The long hours, the amount of time that we're spending just serving others and taking care of everyone else,” she says. “We put ourselves last on the list.”

Campbell says the nonprofit has developed a community cookbook to be the vessel and conduit to support individuals through the sale of a book.

The hardback cookbook will be supported by a virtual cookbook, which Campbell says will be released in time for the holidays, this year.

“It's interactive, so it has recipes, but then you also get to see the story of the professionals behind the scenes.” she said

The funds raised from the sale of these initiatives will help restaurant workers pay for expenses like therapist co-pays or addiction services.
