PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia officials confirmed they have received a letter from the Justice Department regarding the city’s immigration policy, though they say it arrived after the deadline for a response.

The letter arrived Friday afternoon, according to officials, more than a week after Attorney General Pam Bondi said she sent letters to all 34 cities, counties and states she deems to be “sanctuary jurisdictions.”

The letter demands that the jurisdictions respond with initiatives they’re taking to eliminate policies and practices that impede federal immigration law. The deadline was last Thursday.

The city says it will respond to the DOJ but will not share the response publicly.

A city policy bars detaining people without a judicial warrant. However, the city’s position is that the policy is in compliance with federal immigration law.
