NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A local teenager is making his debut at the PGA Championship in Delaware County this week, as a caddy. It's the opportunity of a lifetime for the young student of the game, in a position usually reserved for seasoned vets.
Beau Riviere is a senior at Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia. During a time where most kids his age are focused on prom and hanging out with friends, the Pennsylvania golf state champion is focused on caddying at the PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club.
"This is awesome," he said. "I love playing golf. I love playing competitively, but getting to caddy is also such a great opportunity and really special, but I’m just grateful that I’m here."
Riviere is caddying for Braden Shattuck, a Delaware County native competing in the championship.
"I’m known him for about four years now. I took a lesson from him last year," he told KYW Newsradio. "He asked me instead of paying him just caddy for him, and it kind of went off from there."
And Shattuck has nothing but praise for his caddy who is attending Allegheny College this fall on a golf scholarship.
"The nice part is when I call him over and say, 'Hey bud, I need a read here, hey, I need your opinion,' he’s ready to go with information. I trust his opinion," Shattuck said.
As one can imagine, Riviere is the man right now in his friend circle. "They're telling me, 'Don't mess it up,' but they're happy for me," he said, though he added his teachers weren't as happy about him missing school.
"They understand it's a great opportunity. They get it — as long as I get my work done."
During a week with a lot of pressure on his young shoulders, Riviere is taking it in stride. "It’s fun, it’s surreal, it’s a dream come true," he shared, "and I’m just trying to enjoy it as much as I can."
