Philly’s public ice skating rinks are now opening with safety measures in place

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The opening of public ice skating rinks across Philadelphia was delayed because of the pandemic. But now, they are starting to open with social distancing measures in place.

Skating is free at the five public ice rinks around the city, and Parks and Recreation Commissioner Kathryn Ott Lovel said they are offering more skating times than ever before, but people need to register online.

“It's sort of a hidden treasure in Philadelphia that we have public ice rinks. Many people, I'm surprised, don't know about them, still,” she said.

They're taking measures to help keep their rinks COVID-19 free, including crowd limits and extra training for staff on sanitation and operation protocols.

And all levels of skaters are welcome to use their facilities.

“It's really just a really fun way to get out and enjoy the winter weather. We also have some skate lessons that we're starting up,” she added.
