PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Phoenixville man is accused of putting a loaded gun in his son’s backpack and sending him to elementary school with it.
The Chester County District Attorney’s Office said 58-year-old Russell Matthews is charged with reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child.
When the boy opened his book bag at Harres Hill Elementary School and found the gun, he recognized that it was his father’s and told a school counselor, who secured it immediately, authorities said.
Matthews later told police he had placed the gun in the wrong backpack.
