PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The car Philadelphia police chased into New Jersey Wednesday night is apparently not associated with the mass shooting in Kensington that took place over the weekend.
Patrol officers spotted a dark-colored Honda Accord with a heavy tint that matched the vehicle description believed to be involved in the mass shooting at Kensington and Allegheny avenues last weekend, which left nine people wounded, and another shooting in the same area that left one person injured in October.
“The vehicle used in these shootings had blue aftermarket headlights,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small.
But upon further investigation, police now say the driver of that car is not associated with the Kensington shooting. The investigation into the police pursuit is ongoing.
The chase began around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. Officers chased the 26-year-old driver on the ground while a police helicopter followed. The driver then took the Tacony Palmyra Bridge into South Jersey.
“When the vehicle got to the intersection of Evesham Road and Route 73, it pulled into a parking lot,” Small said. “The driver then got out of the vehicle and fled into a wooded area.”
Evesham Township police got involved and quickly took the man into custody. His ID was left behind in the car so they were able to identify him.
The car was towed back to the police garage as part of this investigation. There is no word yet from authorities on any charges.
