PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Three police officers were injured when a driver tried to flee a traffic stop in Kensington overnight.

Around 3 a.m. Thursday, authorities said officers stopped a car near Kensington and Allegheny avenues because they thought the driver might have been drunk.

Police Inspector D.F. Pace said the driver tried to flee.

“At that point, they attempted to extract the driver from the vehicle but the driver took off,” he said, “in the process, striking one of the officers who was at the time using his flashlight to look inside the vehicle and struck his arm.”

Pace said other police vehicles were eventually able to stop the fleeing car, and a second officer had to break the window of the car to get the driver out. That officer sustained cuts on his hand.

A third officer was hurt when the driver and another officer fell on him, Pace said.

The driver is now in custody and is expected to face charges.

None of the officers’ injuries are serious, officials said, and they are all expected to recover.
