PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man was shot and wounded by police in North Philadelphia Friday, after officials say he initially fired at officers. Police believe the suspect may be connected to a deadly shooting that took place earlier in the day.
Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said two officers were driving down North 10th Street near Westmoreland Street around 6 p.m. Friday evening, when a suspect began shooting at them.
“They started taking gunfire by a male, about 59 years old, that was seated in his car. The officers put out over the air that they were being shot at, and they called for an assist over the radio,” said Outlaw.
“These officers were literally just driving up the street when the subject started shooting at the officers and hit the officers’ vehicle,” she added. “Then he got out of the car, and then that's when he continued to shoot up the officers.”
She said additional officers arrived on the scene.
“The officers returned fire, and at some point the individual was struck,” said Outlaw.
Police say the suspect suffered a graze wound to the head, and was last reported in stable condition at Temple Hospital.
No police were injured in the incident, something Outlaw called “beyond lucky.”
Outlaw said they believe the man is connected to a deadly shooting in Delaware County. Earlier Friday afternoon, a victim was fatally shot outside of a Fedex facility near Philadelphia International Airport.
A Fedex spokesperson says they “are shocked and saddened by the senseless act of violence and that they are fully cooperating with the investigating authorities.”
