PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Pope Leo will present a new Villanova University award for sustainability bearing his name this fall.
The Pope Leo XIV Sustainability Medal will be presented to “individuals whose leadership has advanced sustainability, ecological responsibility, and integral human development,” according to a Villanova press release. Recipients will have proven themselves to prioritize “the ethical mandate of caring for the marginalized and bridging the gap between rigorous science and moral conviction.”
Pope Leo shares a connection with the university, graduating from Villanova with a math degree in 1977. He was later awarded an honorary doctorate of humanities in 2014.
The award winner will be announced in September, and the award will be officially presented during the Villanova International Sustainability Conference, which will take place from October 12-15 in Rome.
In a statement, Villanova president Rev. Peter Donahue said the medal reflects the belief “that care for our common home and care for one another are inseparable.”
“By recognizing leaders whose work advances both environmental stewardship and the common good, we hope to inspire meaningful and lasting impact in communities around the world,” he said.
