PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia may be about to lose an attraction that has become one of its most popular landmarks.
The Portal arrived in 2024 as part of the lead-up to the semiquincentennial. The city’s 2026 director, Michael Neumis, said it’s been a huge hit with residents and tourists.
“It’s been so popular and so much fun, and my favorite thing is seeing folks from all over the world waving and meeting other folks, but this really was part of the plan that it would be here for the 250th, and I can’t wait to see what’s next for it,” Neumis said. “I think overall it’s been a really unifying and joyous experience.”
The Portals’ founder, Benediktas Gylys, said he wants it to stay in Philadelphia but needs a new partner. In a post on the Portals’ website, he said the new host should have a prominent, publicly accessible location with sufficient space, power and internet connectivity.
He said they should step up by the end of September so the new site can be prepared in time for the Oct. 31 relocation.
