PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A house explosion in Pottstown last May was not caused by a leak in a natural gas line, according to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC). However, an exact cause has yet to be determined.
On May 26, 2022, a blast completely leveled a house on Hale Street, killing five people — a grandmother and four of her grandchildren.
Several others were injured, and nearby residences suffered severe damage.
In a statement, PUC said it has concluded its investigation and found no evidence that natural gas contributed to this event.
PUC said PECO did not provide service to the house. Inspectors monitored the explosion site in the days after the blast but did not detect natural gas.
PUC said there was a propane tank outside the house, but that’s not part of its jurisdiction, nor is anything inside the home.
Borough officials, in their own statement, said while they were not aware that PUC was releasing its findings on Tuesday, they are “pleased to learn that we are one step closer to determining the cause” of the explosion.
“Borough Officials will continue to work with other investigating agencies until a determination is made of what caused the explosion on Hale St. last May,” the statement continues.
