PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man convicted for his role in the shooting death of 39-year-old Ishan Charmidah Rahman, a pregnant Philadelphia mother, during a drug deal gone bad will spend decades behind bars after an emotional sentencing hearing Tuesday morning.
After Judge Charles Ehrlich handed down the sentence of 26 to 72 years in prison, Razique Bumpas slumped his head and said, "But this was never meant to happen" — to which the judge responded, "You were part of a shootout" and now a pregnant woman and her baby are dead.
Prosecutors say in February of 2020, Bumpas and another man who has not been identified met up near 9th and York streets in North Philadelphia with Rahman's boyfriend for a drug deal. Bumpas and the man attempted to rob Rahman's boyfriend. Rahman was shot, and her boyfriend was shot in the chest. Only he survived.
Bumpas was charged with murder, but the jury convicted him of only a few charges, including two counts of conspiracy to commit murder in the second degree, aggravated assault and robbery.
During the hearing, Rahman's tearful mother spoke of her constant pain and grief she lives in. She spoke of Rahman's five children, one of whom has special needs and keeps asking where his mother is and whether she's ever coming back. She spoke of Rahman's twin daughters going through high school and graduating without their mother.
Bumpass, 26, who did not have an adult criminal record, told the judge he was sorry for what happened and apologized to the family — saying he had a bad addiction and did the best he could do.
The judge said he didn't think Bumpas got up that morning to kill someone but said, "You did a robbery with a deadly weapon" — and this is the aftermath.
