Officials urge people in need to apply right away

CAMDEN COUNTY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — There is $2 million in rental assistance money remaining for people in Camden County who suffered financially during the pandemic. County officials have urged people to send their applications right away.

The message from Camden County Commissioner Director Lou Cappelli is basically get it while it lasts.

"We anticipate that the balance of these funds will be committed by the end of September," he said. "We have so far assisted about 5,000 residents and we've expended about $33 million. So it’s been a very successful program."

The county received $35 million for rental assistance as part of the federal CARES Act and there's about $2 million left. Cappelli says there are some requirements to qualify.

"These are residents who qualified for unemployment or experienced a reduction in household income as a result of COVID," he explained. "They demonstrate risk of homelessness or housing instability, and have a household income that it at or below 80% of the area median income."

Approved applications could be granted up to 18 months of back rent, dating back to March 2020, and up to three months future rent.
