Trash collection delays during heat wave have residents making a stink

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The intense summer heat mixed with uncollected trash is causing a stink in Philadelphia.

Residents in various parts of the city were complaining trash collection wasn't on time this past week.

Ron Ellis was talking with his friends at 23rd and Catherine streets. "They aren't one or two days behind," he said. "They're like, three days, four days behind on this stuff."

He added, "They're not going backwards but they're not going that forward either, because like I say, if you got a Monday pickup day and Thursday you're still getting the rest of the garbage around here, what happened between Monday and Wednesday?"

Another man noted he saw noticed trash collectors skipping some residents' trash put out on the sidewalk from time to time.

Near 12th and Race streets, one man threw a red plastic bag into a large mound of uncollected trash around a receptacle.

The Streets Department told KYW Newsradio collection delays this summer were due to staffing issues and increased trash tonnage. The department said it made progress in collections through increased hiring of staff.

It appears the city caught up with majority of collection by the end of the week. They reminded residents to report uncollected trash through its 311 phone system. The exact address is requested.
