GLENOLDEN, P.A. (KYW Newsradio) — A Delaware County apartment complex was ruled so dangerous that it was condemned, forcing dozens of its residents to vacate on the cusp of the holidays.
From dangerously high carbon monoxide levels to a natural gas leak and a boiler shooting water into an electrical room, Turner Apartments on Chester Pike in Glenolden was found by inspectors to have multiple dangerous issues.
Glenolden Borough Manager Brian Razzi said the last thing authorities wanted was to put people out of their homes during the holidays, but residents were in a very dangerous situation.
“The borough council and the mayor are dedicated to the safety of the residents and first responders. We can’t send volunteer firefighters into a building that’s unsafe to rescue people who shouldn’t be living in the building,” said Razzi. “The borough’s heart goes out to the families that are displaced, especially this time of year, but we can’t let them live in unsafe conditions.”
Nicholas Damato has run a karate studio out of one of the commercial spaces at Turner Apartments on Chester Pike. He said he’s been able to get by holding his classes in other locations, but feels for the residents.
“They’re basically living in a hotel or with family and friends, and it seems like they know they’re probably not going to be able to move back in, so they’re trying to find a new permanent home,” said Damato.
In addition to condemning the building, the Borough is suing Turner Apartments for not having a rental license or making necessary repairs.
