ORELAND, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — The 40-year-old accused of stabbing a man on I-476 after a road rage incident and crash has been ordered to stand trial on aggravated assault charges.
It was around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6 at the merge point of I-76 east to 476 south, according to prosecutor Bob George.
“Samuel Marquez crashed into the victim's vehicle, stepped out of that vehicle [and] began a physical altercation which ended in a stabbing,” said George.
The stabbing victim testified at the preliminary hearing that he leaned on his horn after a minivan and SUV cut him off on 76 east, then a U-Haul truck wouldn’t let him pass.
He said the jockeying continued onto the ramp to 476. With the minivan in front and the SUV beside him, the U-Haul hit him from behind. The drivers of the SUV and of the U-Haul then started punching him through the windows of his car. That was when he said he heard Marquez say he was going to get his knife.
The victim was on the phone with 911, trying to get the license plate of the minivan when he felt what he thought was a punch to his side. However, he soon realized he had been stabbed.
The three vehicles then drove off. The U-Haul was spotted at the Sunoco gas station on Lancaster Avenue and Marquez was taken into custody in a nearby park.
While Marquez has been ordered to stand trial on charges including aggravated assault, his lawyer Andrew Levin said there were three other people on the side of the road at the time.
“You have multiple vehicles involved in what I believe is a mutual physical altercation,” he said. “It's clear that the complaining witness gets stabbed. I don't think it's clear by who.”
