PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia police are investigating a homicide incident in a neighborhood in Kensington, where a man was found dead outside of an elementary school in broad daylight.
A rock was apparently the weapon used in the killing.
Police said it was around noon Thursday when they found the body of a 37-year-old man near Mascher and Ontario streets, right where Cramp Elementary School is located.
Authorities say the man was assaulted with a rock. He died from his injuries.
Police took a suspect into custody.
Nearby, crime scene investigators were searching a row home on Waterloo Street, while kids were laughing and playing in a small pool just a few feet away.
"It's just sad because in reality, this block, we have our issues, but for the most part we try to get along," said Evelyn Ruiz, who has lived in the area for 10 years.
Neighbors say the man who was taken into custody lives on the street, and that the victim was jumping fences in the neighborhood before he was killed.
As of early Thursday evening, police had not given any further details as to what charges the man may be facing, or what led to the incident.
