PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — For the first time ever, Philly’s Roots Picnic will take the stage in Europe.
“Every movement has a beginning, and some places already know what it means to make history. From the soul of Philadelphia, where the Roots built their legacy, to the rhythm of London, a city built on sound, style and rebellion,” said a video posted to Roots Picnic’s website. “Different streets, same spirit.”
The music festival will kick off at Crystal Palace Bowl on Saturday, Aug. 8, and run through the following day.
There will be a special 2-hour joint performance by Nas & The Roots and Sasha Keable on opening day, followed by a superset from J. PERIOD Live Mixtape Feat, Black Thought, Yasiin Bey, Benny the Butcher and Nia Smith.
On Sunday, Anthony Hamilton and Musiq Soulchild will hit the stage, as well as Robert Glasper and Questlove. Plus, Floetry is set to have their first hometown performance there in over a decade.
Festival presale opens Monday, April 20, at noon.
The Roots Picnic will also return this year in Philly, but at a different location than usual: the Belmont Plateau. It runs May 30 and 31. Jay-Z will headline the first night, and Erykah Badu will headline the second.
