PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Roxborough High School is in line to receive brand-new exterior doors as part of a district security upgrade.
The school board is set to approve the purchase of 26 fiberglass exterior doors, equipped with panic bar devices that allow the principal and school police to know when each one is opened.
“The doors are going to be connected to a central system interconnected with the new CCTV system that’s going to monitor security and add access control management,” said district spokesperson Monique Braxton.
In 2022, 14-year-old student Nicolas Elizalde was shot and killed while leaving the school’s football field after a scrimmage. Shortly thereafter, the school received a $500,000 state grant that provided security upgrades to the building, including lighting and closed-circuit TV. This school board expenditure would be outside of that.
As it adopts next year’s $4.6 billion budget Thursday night, the school board is also expected to sign off on $715,000 for the Roxborough High doors and security monitoring.
