PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The final day of Philadelphia Marathon weekend welcomed thousands of runners and spectators along the Parkway Sunday morning, as temperatures hovered near 30 degrees.
The 32nd annual Philadelphia Marathon began under the Star-Spangled Banner, with 17,000 participants tackling the 26.2-mile course that wound through Center City, Queen Village, Fairmount Park, and finished back at the Art Museum.
Danielle and Jenn, visiting from Canada with a busload of runners, said running in the cold was an advantage.
“It’s a cult! Just joking,” Jenn said. “We came from Canada.”
“She’s not totally wrong,” Danielle said.
Some runners crossed the finish line exhausted but smiling. Ottis said he was happy to finish.
“Feeling terrible but I’m happy to be done,” he said. “Not going to be walking for a couple days.”
Melikhaya Frans, 35, of Gqeberha, South Africa, was the first male professional to complete the race with a time of 2:13:57. The first female pro to finish was 26-year-old Anna Oeser, of Brookfield, Connecticut with a time of 2:34:55.
