REINDEER STABLES, HERSHEY PARK, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Santa Claus' team of reindeer on Monday got a clean bill of health — and clearance to fly through Pennsylvania on Christmas Eve. Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, Rudolph — and Santa, himself — were at Hershey Park's Christmas Candylane for the announcement from Pennsylvania's Department of Agriculture.

"I want to thank everybody for coming out every year and certifying my reindeer, and I hope everyone has a very merry Christmas," said Claus, who took time away from his busy schedule to pop into Pennsylvania for the certification.

Assistant State Veterinarian Dr. Erin Luley explained what the Department of Agriculture looks for when examining the reindeer:

“Today we are checking to make sure that they're healthy, that they have a clean hair coat to keep them warm during flight, that their limbs are strong and free from injury, their heart and lungs are healthy for the trip and their eyes are clear so they can see where they are pulling Santa's sleigh,” Luley said.

“Additionally, we are checking for any signs of disease that could spread to other animals. Since these reindeer are visiting Pennsylvania we want to make sure that they don't bring any germs with them that could put our Pennsylvania animals at risk."

Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding gave the approval for Claus' team of reindeer to fly to homes in the state.

"A critical part of agriculture, of course, during these holidays, is the health and happiness of Santa's reindeer, who need to be in tip-top shape to deliver joy to the world. Just like any other athlete or team, Santa's reindeer need proper nutrition and care to be ready for the big night,” Redding said.

He concluded by saying all of Santa's reindeer are free of disease and strong enough to fly rooftop to rooftop in Pennsylvania to deliver toys to all the good little girls and boys.
