PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Now that COVID-19 restrictions are easing a bit, the Pennsylvania SPCA is holding its first in-person event this weekend to help the nonprofit shelter, and the first of its many pet-friendly public events.
"We're excited to get back and have people at the property and really have that community feel of saving lives," PSPCA's Gillian Kocher said about Tails and Trails. The 10th annual five-kilometer run and two-kilometer walk returns after operating virtually during the pandemic.
The outdoor event allows participants and their dogs to get a little exercise and mingle at the Main Line Animal Rescue, all for a good cause.
"We're going to have over 350 people come together to save lives, and last year we couldn't do any of that," Kocher said.
She revealed how the nonprofit's challenges in 2020 included figuring out ways to sustain its mission of rescuing animals from cruelty and neglect, and placing them in loving forever-families.
"We know there are animals out there in need who need to be rescued, and we certainly couldn't do this work without the funding of events like this, so it really helps us continue our work and even expand it," Kocher said.
In addition to this event, you can bring your dog to Yappy Hour at Morgan's Pier every first Monday this summer.
Felines aren't forgotten, either. This month at the PSPCA is all about adopting sheltered cats.
