NEW CASTLE, Del. (KYW Newsradio) — A woman is in critical condition after a school bus crashed in New Castle Wednesday morning.

First responders arrived at the intersection of Route 896 and Red Lion Road around 8 a.m. and found a woman trapped inside a Sedan with a school bus on top. The bus was full of students on their way to school.

After removing the bus from the woman’s badly mangled car, crews spent two hours trying to extract her.

“We had to cut away the undercarriage of the vehicle, move the dash off of her and then we had the guard rail to deal with, which is also a challenging situation,” said Captain Brandon Speakman with the Christiana Fire Company.

“You’re trying to piece together how to pull the car apart that’s not designed to be pulled apart around somebody who’s already seriously injured.”

The sedan was flattened and twisted and the bus had a lot of front-end damage.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials say students on the bus were released to their families. None were injured during the crash.

According to a statement from Appoquinimink School District, “Families with students on the bus have been communicated with directly and will continue to receive direct updates if there is more information to share.”

A large portion of 896 was closed for hours.
