PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — SEPTA is closing the 11th Street stop on the Market-Frankford Line for a year to add elevators and to make other improvements.
Starting Sept. 5 and for the next year, the El will bypass the 11th Street stop in Center City. The station’s 9,400 daily riders will have to use the 8th or 13th Street stations.
SEPTA is making 11th Street ADA-compliant by installing elevators to street level, as well as improving the platforms and lighting, and adding nearly full-length fare gates.

By closing the station altogether, the work can be completed in a third of the time, said SEPTA project manager Will Kunkle.
“A normal project of this magnitude is about 35 to 36 months. So by passing it for 12 months, we’re really gaining and shortening that duration,” he said.
It will also save about $3 million off the $44 million price tag.
The underground concourse is also closing between 11th and 13th streets during construction.
