PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man is dead after he was shot on SEPTA's Broad Street Line in North Philadelphia Friday night.

SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch says an 18-year-old was pacing back and forth around 7:30 p.m. on a northbound train near Girard Station, then started to hit another man in the head, knocked him to the ground and continued to hit him.

That’s when police say the man pulled out a gun and shot the 18-year-old. He then left the station and reported to officers what had happened. Officials say the man had a license to carry a firearm.

The 18-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died. The man, who police say suffered serious injuries to his head, was taken into police custody and treated for his injuries.

“Based on what we see so far, we’re investigating this as a case of an individual who is attempting to save himself from further serious bodily injury,” said Police Inspector D.F. Pace.

The District Attorney’s Office will weigh in to determine whether or not charges will be filed.

Trains bypassed the station in both directions Friday night as officials investigated.
