PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A SEPTA police officer charged with assault during civil unrest in 2020 has been sentenced to probation after being convicted by a jury in May of simple assault and reckless endangerment.
Matthew Sinkiewicz was accused of striking two protesters with his baton while he was on duty outside City Hall in Center City on May 30, 2020.
He was fired a month later and then charged by the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office.
Judge Nicholas Kamau sentenced Sinkiewicz to 3 ½ years of probation. He must also attend anger management classes, write heartfelt apologies to both victims, and complete 100 hours of community service.
