SEPTA software glitch double-charges about 1,600 riders

The transit agency is issuing refunds

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — SEPTA said it's corrected an issue that caused hundreds of Regional Rail riders to be double-charged for their trips. Now the transit agency is giving refunds to commuters who were affected.

About 1,600 Regional Rail riders found their SEPTA Key cards double-charged last month. The cost of the rides was deducted from their weekly or monthly pass, as well as their Travel Wallet balance.

SEPTA spokesperson Kelly Greene said for a two-week stretch, the tap-and-go fare card readers didn't register when riders tapped in or out.

"A software bug caused some of our fare validators to go offline," Greene explained, "and that resulted in those customers being charged duplicate fares on their Key cards, and some accounts incurred a negative card balance."

She said the bug was patched shortly after it was discovered.

"We put a software fix in place as soon as possible. About half of the affected customers have already received their refunds and we expect to issue the rest of those refunds by the end of next week," said Greene.

She said the refunds are being issued automatically. However, if a rider discovers a double charge that hasn't been refunded by the end of next week, Greene suggested they contact SEPTA Key customer service at 1-855-567-3782.
