Pack your patience: SEPTA warns of long rides after World Cup matches

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — SEPTA said it's ready to transport fans for the World Cup games. But it may not be a quick ride.

Leaving Lincoln Financial Field on the subway after a World Cup match could take as long as the game itself. At a City Hall news conference, SEPTA General Manager Scott Sauer said the Broad Street Line can transport about 15,000 people per hour.

Up to 40,000 fans are expected to take the subway for each match. So that's two to three hours to and from the game, even with extra service, Sauer explained.

Rides home after the six matches will be free, thanks to a sponsorship. SEPTA will hold several Regional Rail trains late for night games to make sure fans can get home.

For fans going to the FIFA World Cup 26 Fan Festival at Lemon Hill, Sauer said extra buses will run on Routes 32 and 48, with 700 ambassadors throughout the system to answer questions.

The first match is on Sunday, June 14, at 7 p.m.
