America 250

June 19 through July 4

This July 4th marks our nation’s 250th anniversary, so of course Philadelphia, the city where the Declaration of Independence was signed, is the center of attention. Just about everyone is getting in on the fun, so let’s focus on some of the big organizers.

Philly’s tried and true Wawa Welcome America festival brings 16 days of events to the semiquincentennial.

About 10,000 people are expected to march in what is being billed as the largest-ever Independence Day Parade in Philadelphia’s history (which will actually be held on July 3).

Also on July 3 is the Philly Pops concert at Independence Mall, accompanied by Idina Menzel. Queen Latifah will join the U.S. Army Field Band & Soldiers’ Chorus on July 2, and gospel singer Kirk Franklin will front a 250-voice choir drawn from local churches on June 28. DJ Jazzy Jeff will headline the annual Juneteenth Block Party at the African American Museum.

New events include a three-day Philly Fair in Fairmount Park and a free Philadelphia Orchestra concert as part of Pride Month hosted by Trixie Mattel.

The events are all free and open to the public from Juneteenth through Independence Day.

The lineup for the big July Fourth concert on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway has not yet been announced.

For all Welcome America events, visit july4thphilly.com/events. (America250PA has dozens and dozens of events and programs taking place across the state, too.)

The Historic District’s Red, White and Blue To-Do celebration on July 2 — the Independence Day date recognized by John Adams — is also jam-packed. The day includes:

  • Living Liberty Bell, a gathering of 250 people to create an outline of the famous bell on Independence Mall
  • Flag-raising at the Betsy Ross House
  • Red, White and Blue To-Do Pomp and Parade
  • All-American Block Party on Third Street, between Chestnut and Walnut streets, and onto Dock Street, with music, games, food and more
  • Free street music performances at 10 locations throughout the Historic District
  • And more special events at historic attractions

MLB All-Star Game

July 14 at Citizens Bank Park

As Philadelphia celebrates the nation’s 250th birthday this year, the 96th Midsummer Classic is one of the centerpiece events. This will be the fifth time the city hosts the MLB event.

But before the main event, there’s All-Star Week. It kicks off on July 10 with the fourth annual HBCU Swingman Classic, highlighting top Division 1 student-athletes at HBCUs (historically Black colleges and universities). Ticket information here.

The All-Star Futures Game on July 12 highlights baseball’s top prospects playing in a seven-inning exhibition with some of Minor League baseball’s best promotions, mascots and entertainment filling the atmosphere.

Following the All-Star Futures Game is a new event, MLBx: All-Star 3-on-3. The fast-paced format, built around power hitting and athletic catching, consists of two semifinals and a final, with each game lasting 30 minutes. This co-ed competition unites male and female athletes alongside MLB legends and special guests.

Open throughout the week is the Capital One All-Star Village inside the Pennsylvania Convention Center, creating a one-of-a-kind baseball theme park for fans of all ages.

For the sixth consecutive year, the MLB Draft will also take place during All-Star Week. The opening rounds will take place on July 11 at 1:30 p.m. at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, adjacent to All-Star Village. The MLB Draft is free to attend.

Two youth tournaments, the All-Star Commissioner’s Cup and the Jennie Finch Classic, will be going on throughout the week at FDR Park, with the championship games at the University of Pennsylvania on July 13.

The Home Run Derby is on July 13, and the All-Star Red Carpet Show takes place before the All-Star Game on July 14.
