Gov. Josh Shapiro signed a bill into law on Wednesday that requires cursive handwriting to be taught in Pennsylvania schools.
At least 24 other states also require it be taught.
Proponents, including House Bill 17's prime sponsor, Dane Watro, of eastern Pennsylvania, said in the digital era, learning handwriting has fallen to the wayside. However, students will need to learn how to sign official documents.
Supporters said learning how to write in cursive helps kids develop motor skills and builds hand-eye coordination in developing brains.
The new law goes into effect in 60 days.
