DELAWARE COUNTY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A 16-year-old is dead and several others injured after gunshots rang out during a gathering in Chester Friday night.
Chester police say they responded to the 200 Block of East 10th Street just before 11 p.m. after hearing active gunfire near police headquarters. While approaching the scene, they saw two people running and heard multiple shouts.
Police then found the 16-year-old unresponsive, suffering from gunshot wounds on the front steps of a home. Four others, ages 16, 21, 25 and 26, were also injured. The 21-year-old was found outside the home; the three others, inside.
Two guns were recovered inside — one, near the bottom of the living room steps; the other, in the basement. Several shell casings were in the street and backyard.
Two apartments, as well as a neighboring residence, were struck by gunfire. No injuries were reported.
According to police, the 21-year-old said a dark-colored sedan with tinted windows was seen in the area around the time of the shooting.
All victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
"This heartbreaking violence is a painful reminder that we must come together as a community to protect our neighborhoods and our youth,” said Mayor Stefan Roots. “The City of Chester will not stand idle while senseless acts of gun violence rob families of their loved ones. We are committed to supporting our police department in finding those responsible and to investing in the solutions that bring lasting peace to our city.”
