PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The westbound lanes of I-76 are closed Saturday at Belmont Avenue as investigators try to figure out what led to a violent early morning crash, where a driver was going the wrong way on the Schuylkill Expressway.
Officials said a driver going eastbound on the westbound lanes of I-76 slammed into several cars around 5 a.m.
PennDOT said the crash came at the end of a police chase.
Car parts are scattered across the westbound lanes, and a single car door could be seen leaning against the guard rail. The closure is causing headaches for drivers caught in the congestion leading up to the Belmont ramp.
Officials have not yet said whether anyone was injured, but KYW Newsradio has asked Pennsylvania State Police for more information.
