HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A police call in Mercer County, New Jersey, took a dangerous turn Friday night, when an officer responding to a domestic violence call was shot and wounded by a suspect who, in turn, was shot and killed by police.
Police in Hamilton Township, a suburb of Trenton, say they responded to a domestic violence call around 10 p.m. at a home on the 1800 block of Orchard Avenue. When they arrived, the suspect, armed with a rifle, shot at them from inside the house, according to authorities. Officers returned fire, killing the gunman.
The suspect's gunfire struck one officer several times. The injured officer was transported to an area hospital and is expected to survive.
The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office and the New Jersey Attorney General's Office are investigating but have not yet revealed the identities of the injured officer or deceased gunman.
