PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Over the last decade, many people have consciously decided to take a year off between high school and college, or college and graduate school.

There are key advantages to taking a gap year, including the fact that individuals can earn money to pay for further education, gain valuable life experience, and make future life decisions.

A new study from Northwestern University suggests many medical schools are looking at the gap year as an additional qualification for acceptance. The thought is that additional life experience may improve a doctor's bedside manner.

However, gap years can add financial strain and put those from economically challenged backgrounds at a disadvantage.
