PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It is estimated that as many as 28% of children avoid school by making up an illness. One of the most common reasons is abdominal pain.
Issues at school can range from anxiety to unrecognized learning disabilities, but sadly, school avoidance is far too often the result of bullying.
If you notice that your child is repeatedly missing school or asking not to attend because of vague symptoms like a bellyache or headache, the first step is to make certain that there is not an underlying health condition. The next step is to look at potential psychosocial concerns.
In either case, let your doctor know about it.
