NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Camden is launching a new community solar program to help lower energy costs for low and moderate-income residents.

The Board of Public Utilities' community solar program aims to bring equity to energy bills. Camden Mayor Vic Carstarphen says this will help a lot of people in his city save at least 20% on their bills.

“It’s designed to provide a direct credit to low and moderate-income communities and urban areas like ours that don’t have the residential rooftops, the ground mount solar is not possible for the residents in our community,” he said.

The city will soon accept bids from solar contractors to build solar fields within the Public Service Enterprise Group and have that energy fed into the system.

The mayor says the savings will be noticeable once everything is done, but there’s no timeline on that yet.
