Burlington County is helping low-income seniors buy fresh produce from local farmers

WESTAMPTON, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Low-income seniors from Burlington County can apply for vouchers to be used at farmer’s markets throughout the county.

This program has been around for several years, and county officials say it has proven successful at getting healthy food on the table for people who need it while also supporting local farmers.

This program gives out $25 vouchers to eligible seniors, says Shirla Simpson, the county human services director.

“To be eligible, seniors must be 60 years or older. They have to be residents of Burlington County and they have to have an annual income of less than $25,142 for a single person or less than $33,874 for a married couple.”

Residents had a chance to apply for the program on Friday at an event in Westampton at the Burlington County Amphitheater.

Some farmers had produce there to show and sell their fresh produce. Anyone who was approved to participate in the program was able to purchase vegetables and fruits on the spot.

Applications for vouchers are available until Sept. 30 by calling the Office on Aging at 609-265-5069. Vouchers must be used by Nov. 30.
