PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Three people were injured in a fire early Wednesday morning in South Philadelphia, including one neighbor who went into the burning building to help those trapped inside.

The fire broke out around 7 a.m. in a building attached to a church at 26th and Tasker streets. Firefighters arrived and found a heavy blaze burning on the second floor.

Daniel McCarty, executive chief of the Philadelphia Fire Department, said they rescued two people who were trapped inside.

“That was one elderly male, and he was transported in critical condition to area hospitals. And then we also had a second patient that we assisted and got out of the dwelling. They were transported in stable condition to area hospitals; an adult female,” he said.

A third person sustained smoke inhalation after running into the building to try to save the two others.

Dispatchers put out an all-hands call to battle the fire. Officials said about 85 firefighters from nearly 30 fire companies responded.
