PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The SS United States is staying put for now.
A judge temporarily suspended the deadline for the removal of the ocean liner at Pier 82, pending additional negotiations between the parties.
The decision is the latest in an ongoing dispute between the SS United States Conservancy, the nonprofit that owns the ship, and Penn Warehousing, the pier operator. The decision comes after court-ordered mediation attempts and a rent increase from the pier operator to maintain its spot on the Delaware River.
The SS United States Conservancy released a statement after the judge's decision saying in part that their efforts in the days ahead will "center around conducting good faith negotiations and ensuring that the legacy of America's Flagship endures and inspires for future generations."
