PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Made In America Festival returns to Philadelphia for Labor Day weekend. Preparations are reaching a heightened state with food trucks parked, lawnmowers cutting grass, and concert stages being assembled in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The festival on Saturday and Sunday will welcome thousands of ticket holders to see headlining artists Tyler the Creator and Bad Bunny, along with dozens of other performers.
"Now I want to go get tickets,” said Nessa Gentilella from Central Jersey, passing by workers building the sets.
A major event in a city like this comes with plenty of security. Philadelphia police said earlier this week they will have plain-clothes officers and uniformed personnel around the event, along with Made in America security staff.
"We're really good at handling big events in the city. We handle so many of them, right?” said Philadelphia Police Department Homeland Security Chief Inspector Michael Cram.
“We started planning for this year's Made in America after last year's Made in America. We're constantly looking at what's going on around the country, incorporating lessons learned from our own events, from those events, and really building a safe, fun environment for our attendees."
The festival's website says a clear-bag policy is in place. They will have "extensive security and medical" staff there, and bags are subject to search.
The annual Labor Day weekend tradition brings its own annual traditions for people who live nearby, including Janet from Fairmount.
“I get out of town for the weekend,” Janet said. “It is too chaotic … you get trapped if you live right here in the neighborhood."
A little bit of chaos has already started with roads around the Ben Franklin Parkway being shut down. More are planned each day up through the holiday weekend.
