ATLANTIC CITY (KYW Newsradio) — New Jersey wants to become a leader in the multibillion dollar world of esports. The state is taking the first step by investing in esports education.

The New Jersey Economic Development Authority is giving $200,000 to Stockton University to establish an esports innovation center at its Atlantic City campus.

"They want to be able to have graduates who are coming out of esports programs, and become skilled employees for esports companies looking for resources as they set up in New Jersey," said NJEDA Senior Advisor Bill Penders.

He explained that the center will help bring those same skills to Atlantic City residents, in an effort to help area workers discover better paying jobs.

"The focus would be on technology and product innovation within the esports environment, because esports is highly dependent on technology, data analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence," Penders said.

He added that Atlantic City is the perfect place to spearhead this initiative, because the city can host esports activities and take on the growth of the industry.

"To have that come to the community of Atlantic City was really an important part of our initiative," Penders explained.

The state said the esports industry is expected to globally gross $9 billion every year by 2025.
